A fully funded three-year program in three genres: poetry, fiction and nonfiction, with active encouragement to work across genres.
Students have funding opportunities for research and travel via the departmental English Graduate Union, the Graduate and Professional Student Council, the Confluence Center, and the Institute of the Environment, among other organizations.
Our program consists of workshops in chosen genres, culminating in a final project (the master’s thesis/manuscript) that showcases the writer’s cultivated talents.

The Program offers graduate students the chance to further develop both their craft and their knowledge base, and workshops combine attentive critique of student work with the discussion of readings on and in the various genres—or on special topics particularly relevant to writing today.
The two most important things about the Writing Program for me were the mentorship—being pushed by, and being championed by, faculty—both while I was at Cal Arts and after I graduated.
