A defining feature of the Creative Writing Program is hybridity and experimentation, so students are free to take courses in, and to write in, any genre they wish.Poets may take prose workshops to learn narrative conventions and how to deploy or challenge them; fiction and nonfiction writers may benefit from poetry workshops that hone their use of and engagement with language; and still other students may develop multidimensional writing practices.

A fully funded three-year program in three genres: poetry, fiction and nonfiction, with active encouragement to work across genres.

Students have funding opportunities for research and travel via the departmental English Graduate Union, the Graduate and Professional Student Council, the Confluence Center, and the Institute of the Environment, among other organizations.

Our program consists of workshops in chosen genres, culminating in a final project (the master’s thesis/manuscript) that showcases the writer’s cultivated talents.

The MFA Program in Writing is a two-year residency program that offers interdisciplinary approaches to verbal art.

The masters program in creative writing at the University of Denver focuses on craft as well as the business side of publishing, including working with agents and publishers and creating a personal brand.

The doctoral program resembles a pure mathematics or philosophy Ph D.

Through workshops, independent studies, and literature courses, the faculty work with students to challenge their understanding of themselves as writers and to deepen and critically reflect on the aesthetic, ethical, and political assumptions behind their writing.

The Creative Writing MFA was designed to get over the division between 'creative' and 'critical.' Here, writing is understood as an art form best practiced alongside the other arts, and students benefit from having access to the Cal Arts community of artists as their peers and fellow travelers.

The Program offers graduate students the chance to further develop both their craft and their knowledge base, and workshops combine attentive critique of student work with the discussion of readings on and in the various genres—or on special topics particularly relevant to writing today.

The two most important things about the Writing Program for me were the mentorship—being pushed by, and being championed by, faculty—both while I was at Cal Arts and after I graduated.
