The camps are one-week programs for writers entering grades 3-8 in the fall.The full pieces and project photos can be found here.The San Marcos Writing Project (SMWP) is one of 190 sites of the National Writing Project (17 in California), which is a professional development network of teachers whose goal is to improve student-writing achievement by improving the teaching and learning of writing in the nation's schools.This institute will focus on reading and writing strategies that foster the success of English learners and all learners in K-12 classrooms.Teachers will attend a five-week (four days a week) intensive institute and two half-day follow-up meetings on Saturdays during the following academic year.The classes are grouped by grade level, limited to 18 students, and are led by credentialed teacher consultants with the San Jose Area Writing Project.The hours are am – pm and we are unable to provide daycare in the afternoon. Arts and crafts are offered at lunch time in addition to playground activities.NOTE: Creative Writing applicants are encouraged to apply to begin the program in the Fall semester.The Creative Writing Seminars run consecutively in the Fall and Winter semesters.The student will work independently on this project under the guidance of a Master's Committee consisting of a thesis director (Chair of the Master's Committee), one other member from the Department of English, and one faculty member from another department.Applicants are not required to have a faculty advisor in order to be accepted into the program.
