The MFA offered by the Nonfiction Writing Program and administered by the Department of English has been voted the top MFA program in creative nonfiction in the United States.Likewise, the MFA program in the Writers’ Workshop is annually noted as the top graduate program in the country.Students will also partake in advanced Creative Writing Workshops.

In the final year, you will work on – and complete to high standard – a substantial writing project.

To help you reach this standard, you will be advised and directed by one of the supervisors on the Creative Writing team.

Please note that this is one of two Creative Writing Certificate courses, which can be studied independently of each other, and in any order.

Creative Non-Fiction will run concurrently with this course, and includes units on creative non-fiction, writing about place and life writing.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Creative Writing: Fiction and Writing for Performance offers the chance to explore a range of genres and literary styles as a way of stimulating your own writing voice.

The course offers the chance to experiment in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

First Year Students will also choose from a wide range of specialist English modules such as Making Shakespeare, Gender and Sexuality in the 18th Century, Austen’s Peers, Yeats, Reading Ulysses, Reading Beckett, The Theatre of Martin Mc Donagh.

Fourth Year Students will choose from a wide range of advanced English modules, including Contemporary Historical Fiction, the Crime Novel, Contemporary Irish Writing, Memory and the Irish Stage, Contemporary Irish Women’s Poetry, Modern American Poetry and Poetics.

The status of Iowa City as a UNESCO City of Literature has also enriched the writing community, with people from across the Midwest visiting the town during the annual Book Festival.

The new massive open online courses (MOOCs) offered by the Department of English, “Every Atom: Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself,” and by the International Writing Program’s series “How Writers Write” have enrolled thousands of students and adult learners, enhancing the reputation of Iowa as the Writing University.
