The work is short enough for publication in a literary journal and focuses on the author’s perspective and insight. The personal essay form and commentary may sometimes overlap, but it may be helpful to make some distinctions.

If you’re writing a book about an experience, it’s a memoir.
A collection of interrelated personal essays may constitute a memoir.
