The student should work with the instructor to discuss the aims and content of the study and produce the proposal, which consists of: the description; readings; written work to be evaluated; and syllabus.
Students are required to receive approval for this study from their adviser, the independent study instructor, and the Gallatin Faculty Committee on Individualized Studies by completing an online Independent Study Proposal Form.
There is no guarantee that a non-NYU faculty member will be approved as an instructor of a Gallatin Independent Study.
Students seeking to work with non-NYU faculty members must attach the professor’s curriculum vitae (CV) with the proposal form for review by the Faculty Committee on Individualized Studies. Provide a description of the study: Like the course description in a college catalog, this part of the proposal should describe the general theme and scope of the independent study.
You should include an outline of the various stages and corresponding time lines for developing and implementing the research, including writing up your thesis.
For full-time study your research should be completed within three years, with writing up completed in the fourth year of registration.Students have the opportunity to follow their own investigational instincts through undergraduate research. This requires a collaborative effort between the student and faculty.A Gallatin Independent Study provides students with the opportunity to work one-on-one with an instructor on a particular topic or creative project.Designing the independent study is an important part of the project.Research that culminates in the production of an undergraduate research thesis allows the student to receive the designation of “With Research Distinction” or “With Honors Research Distinction” on their diploma. For additional details regarding these levels of distinction including requirements, timelines, scholarship, and proposal writing, please thoroughly review the Undergraduate Research Informational Packet. The School of Economics participates in the Research Option offered in conjunction with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. The Research Option offers students the opportunity for a substantial, in-depth research experience. It offers students a taste for what long-term research can be like and provides extensive experience not found within a typical course setting.One-on-one student and faculty mentoring is also a highlight of the experience.
