A compare/contrast piece I wrote for my English class last semester on the similarities and differences between the writings of Edgar Allen Poe and William Cullen Bryant.

Like other terms describing literary movements, the term Romanticism defies simple definition for a number of reasons.See the list of themes and elements below for a clearer description of the elements of Romanticism. Name & Genres Expansive Idealism Humanitarianism and democracy Equality Abolition Utopian ideals The noble savage Dignity of common man Primitivism The nature of good or evil Conflict between spirit and body Mysticism, Pantheism, Transcendentalism Gothicism abnormal psychology Exotic settings--time and place Nature as symbol of Divine Faith vs, Doubt Organic unity Individual soul as as part of the greater soul of God Great Chain of Being Ways of Knowing--Reason/Imagination, spirit/senses, mind/external reality Individualism Conformity vs. Harper's Magazine Knickerbocker Magazine Matthiessen, F. With unity, comes happiness, something Bryant stresses on his meditation of death as seen in "Thanatopsis". 192, Lines 80 - 81, "Thanatopsis"), something one with another view of death such as Poe's would not even suggest in the slightest.In conclusion, it can be said that Bryant did his best to convey death as warm, welcoming, and uniting, three things that in turn cause happiness, something he also stressed.Bryant also expresses his views of equality in death in another way, likening death to an (P.192, Line 74, "Thanatopsis"), in which all people are one within this caravan, no being grater than another, for they are all part of the very same caravan.However, Poe also felt that pain could come in the form of shock, as seen in "The Fall of the House of Usher", in which Poe takes a turn in this view, showing the pain of death in the form of shock,did stand the lofty and enshrouded figure of the lady Madeline of Usher, There was blood upon her white robes, and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame.For a moment she remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold -- then, with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse, a victim to the terrors he had anticipated…" (P.uses cookies to personalize content, tailor ads and improve the user experience.
